The certificate has many advantages. First, when you have the certificate, you can ask anyone for a favor - your not just limited to close friends and family. People you would not ordinarily ask. That means the range of what you can ask for and the value of what is provided also expands. Second, you can win a $2,500 prize if you tell us your story. See the "Tell Us Your Story" page.  Third, the certificate can used by dozens or even hundreds of people. So your participation benefits many people. There are other prizes described under the Prizes Tab.

Giving it as a gift is consistent with the nature of favors - a kindness that is done for others.

It started with thoughts about how to best increase the level of goodness in the world. Favors are an expression of benevolence and cooperation among people. It is one of the purely good things that humans do for each other. In fact, favors are a part of every world community and every world religion. So the thought was - how can we promote and expand that?

Favor Power is based on research by a Harvard University graduate student. The research showed that people are reluctant to ask for favors for various reasons. And sometimes people are reluctant to grant a favor.  Favor Certificates overcome the obstacles to both asking for, and granting, a favor.  A favor is an expression of kindness and goodwill. It is pure kindness in helping another. So expanding the use of favors will encourage and expand the amount of goodness in the world.

Not at all. We are expanding it. With Favor Certificates, the goodwill can spread faster and farther than ever. By the way, we don't stop you from doing things the "old fashioned way" you can still request a favor and hope it might be returned one day.
